Trust and safety

What we check before a tutor is listed, what we deliberately do not collect about children, and what to do if something is wrong.

Who the tutors are

AB Tutors is not an open marketplace. A teacher cannot list themselves; our team decides who appears.

Certified teachers only
Every tutor will be an American Board certified teacher. American Board certifies teachers by examining them in the subject they teach and in how to teach it.
Certification checked
We check each tutor’s certification before their profile is listed, and the profile shows what has been verified.
Profile reviewed by a person
Someone on our team reads each tutor’s background, subjects and profile, and approves it, sends it back with questions, or declines it.
Reviews from real lessons
Only the account that paid for a completed lesson can review it, once. Nobody can review a tutor they have not had a lesson with.

Children do not have accounts

This is a decision, not a missing feature. The adult is the customer and stays in the loop.

A parent or guardian holds the account
You choose the tutor, book, pay and open each lesson. A child cannot sign in, book or be contacted on their own.
First name and grade
That is what we ask about a child. No email address, no password and no date of birth.
Messages are between adults
You can message any listed tutor. A tutor can write first only to a family that has booked them, and can never message a child.

During a lesson

Lessons are one-to-one and online, in the tutor’s own meeting room.

You join through the lesson page
The link to the meeting room is not shown on any public page. Both sides enter through Join lesson, which records who came and when.
You are welcome in the room
Stay for the whole lesson with a young child. With an older one, be nearby. No tutor should ask you to leave.
AB Tutors does not record lessons
If you would like a lesson recorded, or would like it not to be, agree that with the tutor beforehand.

If something is wrong

Tell us. A report costs you nothing and does not need proof.

A problem with a lesson
Report it from the lesson page within 48 hours of the lesson ending. The tutor’s payment is held while our team looks at the attendance record and what both sides say.
A message that worries you
Report the message from the conversation. Our team can then read that thread.
Anything else about a tutor
Write to us. We can suspend a listing while we look into it.

If a child is in danger, call 911 first. Then tell us.

What we suggest to every parent

  • Message the tutor before the first lesson and ask about their background
  • Keep every message and every booking inside AB Tutors
  • Set the lesson up in a shared room, not a bedroom with the door closed
  • Do not pay a tutor outside AB Tutors: the refund rules only cover lessons booked here
  • Ask your child afterwards what they worked on
  • Trust a bad feeling and tell us about it

How we handle the information you give us is on the privacy page. More on choosing a tutor: twelve questions to ask before the first lesson.

Be first to know when tutors can be booked

Leave your email and we will write to you once, when AB Tutors opens. No newsletter.
