Questions
Who the tutors are, how lessons work, what they cost and what happens when plans change. Teachers: your questions are at the end.
For families
Who are the tutors?
Every tutor is an American Board certified teacher. Our team reviews each tutor’s background and profile and approves it before families can find it.
Which subjects and grades do you cover?
Math, English, Science, Social studies, from kindergarten to grade 12. Each tutor lists the subjects and grades they teach.
Does my child need an account?
No. A parent or guardian holds the account, adds the child’s first name and grade, and books and pays. Children do not have logins. Adults can also book lessons for themselves.
Can I talk to a tutor before booking?
Yes. You can send a tutor a message from their profile and ask anything about their approach or your child’s course before you book.
When does AB Tutors open?
We are not taking bookings yet. Join the waitlist and we will email you once, when tutors can be booked.
Lessons
Where do lessons happen?
Online, by video, in the tutor’s own meeting room. On the day, open the lesson page and choose Join lesson. It opens 10 minutes before the start.
How long is a lesson?
You choose 30, 60 or 90 minutes when you book.
What do we need?
A computer or tablet with a camera and microphone, a steady internet connection and a quiet place to sit. Have the homework, textbook or assignment to hand.
What if the tutor is not the right fit?
Lessons are booked one at a time, so nothing ties you to a tutor. Book your next lesson with someone else.
Can we keep the same tutor every week?
Yes. Book each lesson with the same tutor at a time that suits you both.
Prices and payment
How much does a lesson cost?
Each tutor sets an hourly rate, shown on their profile and in search. The price of a lesson is that rate for the length you choose, and you see it before you pay.
Is there a subscription or sign-up fee?
No. Creating an account is free and lessons are paid for one at a time.
What if we need to cancel?
Cancel 24 hours or more before the lesson and you get all of your money back. Cancel later than that and you get 50% back. If the tutor cancels or does not turn up, you are refunded in full.
Can we move a lesson to another time?
Yes, until 24 hours before it starts.
What if something goes wrong in a lesson?
Report a problem from the lesson page within 48 hours of the lesson ending. Our team looks at what happened and decides whether the lesson stands or is refunded.
For teachers
Who can tutor with AB Tutors?
Teachers who are American Board certified. We check the certification before a profile is listed.
Who sets my rate and my hours?
You do. You choose an hourly rate for each subject you teach and the weekly hours you are available.
Where do I teach?
In your own online meeting room, such as Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams or Whereby. You add the link once and families join through the lesson page.
When am I paid?
After the lesson is completed and the 48-hour window for reporting a problem has passed.
